Career & Life

Chris grew bored with guitar lessons and decided he would be better off teaching himself. He was a member of a band called “Blitzkrieg” during middle school and starred in a few shows, the first of which was attended by the band at a bar in Ridgewood, New Jersey when Chris was only 13.

At that time, Chris and his kin formed the band “Anti.” Chris graduated from Goshen Central High School in 1984 and went on to make a living as a professional entertainer, working with students during the day and performing musical programs at night. Paul O’Neill was later introduced to the Oliva brothers, Jon and Criss of Savatage by a Columbia Records rep and O’Neill left Heaven to help Savatage.

Eventually, O’Neill invited Chris to New York, where the band recorded the CD. Chris, however, soon discovered that he or she needed a second guitarist in Savatage, which led him to learn all of the Savatage songs he could and was able to learn in time for Savatage’s 1987-1988 tour with Dio and Megadeth. Savatage hired someone else, which made Chris very upset and flew down to audition.Chris Caffery

Chris was allowed to perform something and play two songs before the rock band ended and hired him off stage. The band toured, but Chris was hidden on the fourth side of the theater, visible to nobody. Chris was only twenty years old, playing arenas, and he was happy, but his head ached. He left the Savatage after the venue tour.

Chris was enlisted by Jon and Butcher, but he stayed with Jon and Butcher throughout the recording of Savatage. Some demos were first recorded with Hal Patino and Gene Barnett for Butcher, but a premature negative article over Jon’s health condition led Atlantic Records to make a final decision on Doctor Butcher or Savatage? Atlantic selected Savatage. Chris was left disheartened.

Caffery moved out of his home to work with friend and Badlands guitarist Ray Gillen, but Gillen died shortly after the project began. Around this time, Criss Oliva was killed in a car accident caused by a drunk driver on October 17, 1993. Chris was asked for the fourth time to perform with Savatage, but Atlantic Records proposed Alex Skolnick perform instead.Chris Caffery

Chris later helped Alex helm the award-winning TSO East touring group. Butcher was signed in Europe and their debut record was recorded in 1994. Jon Oliva was given the opportunity to go to Handful of Rain with Savatage, but it was Butcher’s turn this time. Chris, believing he was accountable to Criss “spiritually” on stage, asked to return the band. Jon agreed, and Al Pitrelli, a friend from New York, joined Jon’s business.

The two collaborated for 6 years and recorded The Wake of Magellan in 1995 and Dead Winter Dead in 1998. During this time, Chris recorded with Joe Lynn Turner, and TM Stevens, as well as produced and recorded for Metalium. Chris was featured on Tribute CDs for Guns N’ Roses, Accept, and Iron Maiden. The Maiden tribute to Savatage’s Jeff Plate was recorded with TSO member John West.

While recording the follow-up to The Wake of Magellan, Savatage was held up slightly by a massive breakthrough for TSO’s “side project”, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra. Caffery considers himself “ring leader” of TSO East on tour, and he enjoys performing with the ensemble. In 1999, Caffery contributed to the German band Metalium, and was figured on their album Millennium Metal: Chapter One, but it was after that album and the following tours that he left.Chris Caffery

Al Pitrelli left Savatage in 2000 when he accepted an invitation to replace Marty Friedman in Megadeth. Zak Stevens left shortly thereafter, citing family reasons. Chris was left as the sole guitarist in Savatage, and Jon Oliva took up lead vocal privileges for the first time in 10 years. Chris played the lead parts with Jack Frost (ironically, who replaced him in Metalium) playing the rhythm parts on a short tour with Fates Warning and Judas Priest in 2001 in support of Poets and Madmen.

After Megadeth “disbanded” in 2002, Al Pitrelli was invited to rejoin the band because “he never left the family anyway.” From Savatage’s most recently released CD, Chris has recorded the records of Savatage alumni, including Zak Stevens’s Circle II Circle and Jon Oliva’s Pain. Chris has also solo EPs and albums in 2004 and 2005, with a full-length followup CD, Pins, and Needles, in 2007. Chris has also worked on TSO’s new album Night Castle.

In 2011, Chris introduced his first hot sauce brand called “Tears of the Sun”. It was released by a little hot sauce business that he was a partner in with Steve Seabury and his wife, High River Sauces. The sauce garnered many awards, including the “Hot Pepper Award” for best overall Hot Sauce of 2011.

The second installment of “The Wrath of Grapes” was released in 2012 . The grape juices are gaining a great deal of attention all over the world as the work of building continues. A featured article in the “New York Times” called Chris’s sauce, and the first-ever Hot Sauce Expo in New York City.Chris Caffery
