Marcus Luttrell is a retired U.S. Navy SEAL who received the Navy Cross, the Bronze Star Medal and the Purple Heart. He enlisted in March 1999, graduated from SEAL training in April 2000 and served until 2007, when he was medically discharged.
In June 2005, Luttrell was part of a four-man SEAL reconnaissance team in Afghanistan during Operation Red Wings. Teammates Danny Dietz, Michael Murphy and Matthew Axelson were killed, and a SEAL Team Ten rescue helicopter sent to help was shot down, killing everyone aboard. Luttrell survived and was sheltered by an Afghan villager, Mohammad Gulab, until U.S. forces reached him on July 2, 2005.
He told the story in the 2007 book Lone Survivor, written with Patrick Robinson, which became a New York Times bestseller. Mark Wahlberg played him in the 2013 film Lone Survivor. Parts of the book, including how the team decided what to do about the herders who found them, have been disputed. Luttrell also wrote Service: A Navy SEAL at War (2012) and founded the Lone Survivor Foundation in 2010 to support wounded service members and their families.
